I couldn’t be happier to introduce the newest member of our little studio—Polly the Printing Press! After months of research on the process of letterpress, and countless hours unearthing and ordering all the right pieces and parts for this old press (isn’t she a beauty!) I bought on a trip to Chicago last month from a man’s garage in Indy (thanks to my husband for helping me negotiate a fair deal and haul the thing home), Ink & Ivory is now going to be offering letterpress! And we couldn’t be more excited to get some ink on our hands!

Here’s a little about our day:

Our story started in high school where we fell madly in lust and dated for a couple of years. We decided to go our separate ways duringcollege, I moved to New York and he moved to Florida and we lost contact for few years. Long story short, somehow via electronic media, we rekindled our old romance, this time with a little more maturity and experience under our belts, and a long distance between us. We flew back and forth frequently visiting each other and decided after a long year of being so far apart, that we’d move back to Ohio where we had both grown up. We bought a house and renovated it while living in it, and we both realized, if two people can make that work, they can make it through anything. So one sunny day Nate proposed over a game of scrabble, on a picnic, near a fountain, in our favorite park. He had picked the letters “marry me” out ahead of time and put them in his pocket and when I was looking away, arranged them on the board, with ring in hand. I cried for 20 minutes. Happy tears I will never forget.

Our whole wedding was a labor of love from start to finish. We did almost everything ourselves, which in the long run, requires a great deal of dedication and time commitment but we found it to be much more rewarding because each task was a fun, bonding experience for everyone involved. We truly could not be more grateful for all of the time and love our family and friends poured into making our day perfect. The biggest piece of advice I have is even if you are a control freak, don’t be afraid to ask for help—you’ll make priceless memories with the ones you love in the little projects.

My parents live in the country on a lot of land used to be owned by my grandfather. Nate and I spend a great deal of time there and the guesthouse B&B just up the road from their house has great sentimental value since it is where my mom grew up. Not to mention that the views are picturesque, so it was a no-brainer for us to get married there.

Since it was an outdoor wedding, we wanted it to be earthy and bohemian, with a hint of vintage glam and sparkle. I was thinking gypsies in a field/eclectic/granny chic sort of thing. My mom and I spent months collecting vintage furniture and decorations and storing it in my parent’s garage. My mom and I are both graphic designers with visual eyes so it was hard for us to give up control. We wanted to do everything ourselves, including florals. I have two businesses, which are centered in the wedding industry so I was lucky to have been able to come up with most of the little details myself, with the help of my mom and my bridesmaids. With our wedding just at the end of my busiest season for my businesses yet, I had little time to assemble our save the dates, invites, and the rest of the wedding collateral I had designed, so I enlisted the help of my groom. He was such an amazing sport and we shared so many laughs assembling our stationery (we only had one little snafu when he over licked the envelopes and they stuck together).

My family helped paint furniture and make the hundreds of feet of bunting to hang above the dancefloor out of spray painted kraft paper and twine. For the table runners, my mom and I decided to tear pages from vintage books and spray mount them together scattered randomly and drape them over the end of the tables as table runners. We found tons of old books and fruit and spray painted them gold and white and placed them ontop of the old pages with hydrangeas arranged in vintage urns we had collected. My mom borrowed an old library table from an antique store and we draped burlap on the front and hung a huge vintage painting on it. I made my headpiece and veil as well as the hairpieces for all of the girls. Feathers were a big theme. I love the earthy feel and the graphic patterns. I had used a scan of a bleached peacock feather on our invite that I ended up using in my headpiece, and the girls wore bleached peacock earrings. I let my bridesmaids chose their own “neutral” dresses and shoes and I was so pleased with what they picked. They all looked cohesive but no matchy-matchy. We used vintage scales and cake stands on the dessert table and I came up with the cake topper with the two lovebirds and our names that adorned the top of our all gold cake. For our guests, I created buttons that had little sayings on them and attached them to cards that thanked them for joining us, as well as rock candy in little muslin bags that I had stamped with a design I had created that read “love is steady as a rock, sweet as candy”. Fans with an engagement photo on one side doubled as programs. On the invites, we had requested that guests write some words of advice and a song request, and it was so exciting to read them each time we got one in the mail. We took the advice and printed it on vintage book pages that we tacked with furniture tacks to an old door that we displayed in the reception tent. I knew for the ceremony, I wanted to showcase the beauty of my parent’s property but create a sort of outdoor “venue” with vintage doors that you walked through. My aunt found these really tall, gorgeous doors that my dad drove into the ground. They were dramatic and beautiful. At the end of the evening we passed out paper lanterns and everyone gathered to light and send them off. All of our guests were incredibly moved as the huge balloons floated over up over the fields into the huge open sky.

Our wedding was spectacularly fun! Okay, I’m a little biased but honestly people are still telling me it was one of the most memorable weddings they have ever been to. It had been sunny and beautiful all day long, then as guests started to take their seats, the sky turned really dark and just as my dad and I were about to walk down the aisle, the sky opened up and it poured! And I’m not talking the typical little summer sprinkle—it was an effing downpour! Everyone was soaked and you know what, they rolled with it like complete troopers! As soon as we had kissed and our officiant pronounced us man and wife, Nate scooped my soaking wet Nicole Miller-clad-self up in his arms and carried me up to the guesthouse where we held the reception under a tent. Girls, take note: if it rains on your wedding day, skip the mascara and just opt for fake lashes. It will make all the difference!

The furniture and little details that we had spent tireless hours making were soaked and our gorgeous cake looked like the Leaning Tower of Piza (but shout out Jennifer Tharp, who does a killer cake) due to the humidity. At one point the caterer couldn’t keep his burners going, it was raining and blowing so hard. For one split moment I felt the slightest tinge of disappointment that our months of hard work was going to be ruined but then I remembered how thankful I was that all our friends and family had gathered to honor us and I felt so blessed and extraordinarily happy. I had just married my diamond-in-the-rough man and nothing could possibly ruin the love high I was on! Some things are just out of your control. Eventually the rain stopped, the sky turned a gorgeous color, a rainbow came out and everyone moved out from under the tent onto the dancefloor. No one cared about their hair or how they looked, because everyone was wet, and it allowed people to just let loose and dance their little hearts out to celebrate our love. At the end of the day you can have as many backup plans as you want but none will make it more spontaneous and fun than just throwing control out the window and letting things unfold as they will, even if it means a downpour! It will be the most unforgettable day of your life.

From Concept to Finished Invite

I’ve been swamped lately with a capital “S” and haven’t had a chance to post often but I thought it might be interesting to show what I proposed to clients Rachel and Dan for their literary-themed wedding invite a couple of months ago, and how it turned out!

Here was the proposed concept:

-faux bois cover

-deckle-edge cotton paper

-monogram seal

-hand-sewn together with off-white string

-library pocket and library card for the reply postcard attached to the back inside cover

The Farm on Kenyon Road Logo Design

I recently did some work for The Farm on Kenyon Road owned by the Laymon family in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. I worked with Chrissie (the mom, wife, operator of the whole shebang, who wears many hats) to come up with a rustic logo that was representative of the organic nature of the work they are doing, with a little touch of modern, which is right up my alley. They about “dirty hands, warm hearts and open minds. Encouraging a strong work ethic, respect for the environment and the power of community in the next generation. The Farm brings all natural, grass fed, and sustainably grown products straight from our land to your table.”
